In this section of the Bend to Alvord Desert overland route Edward Shin and I travel through the Hart Mountain Antelope Refuge and camp at an abandoned ranch house known as Shirk Ranch. Shirk Ranch is a great piece of Oregon history and one of my favorite points of interest along the Bend to Alvord Desert Overland route. The ranch was purchased by David Shirk in 1883 and was primarily used as a horse ranch. According to information provided by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Shirk’s daughter worked the ranch until 1945 and then it was leased to various interests until the 1980s. Please be respectful of the location and leave it as you find it.
